Creator Of The Briefcase Speaks With WPHT's Rich Zeoli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The creator and Executive Producer of The Briefcase, David Broome, defended the show, in which two families must decide whether to share a briefcase of money with each other or keep it for themselves, against criticism of sensationalism and that it exploits the poor and underprivileged.

Broome told Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT that critics are choosing to ignore the show's substance for what they see as superficiality.

"Why they don't connect to the show is because they are cynical media who don't understand spirit...As soon as a show taps in to real issues, which is what I'm putting on national television, debt, love, compassion, tough conversation, by the way, really, really hard conversations that you've got to have, as soon as I put that on television, low and behold, the mainstream media, they don't want to deal with it. They'd rather celebrate the Kardashians."

He insists The Briefcase is really about the relationships within families and their empathy toward others.

"The show has just about nothing to do with money. If you hadn't seen it, you might be shocked. It's got everything to do with the love and compassion in your household, communication with the partner in your life, finding a common bond with a complete stranger. That's the spirit of the show. Everybody who has watched the show will tell you that."

Broome also stated he is tired of the media's attacks on reality television and insists quality shows are being produced.

"I don't want to hear the media talk about how fake reality television is and then when you put something real on, because this is as real as it gets, it's an uncomfortable ride, maybe because they're embarrassed that I'm shining the light on these issues. This is tough stuff."

The Briefcase airs Wednesday nights at 8pm on CBS 3.
