Windows 10 Gets A Release Date, Microsoft Pushes Free Upgrade Offer Right To Your Screen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More than 200,000,000 people still use Windows XP, despite Microsoft ending support for the operating system last year. But for those running newer versions of Windows, KYW tech editor Ian Bush reports the company is pushing a reminder to your screen of a free upgrade.
"Windows 10 will be available on July 29th, but you can reserve a copy now."
That's Cortana telling Windows users who have versions 7 or 8 installed that they can download the latest version at no charge automatically. You'll see a Windows icon in your taskbar (at the bottom right, next to the clock). Click it, and it'll let you grab Windows 10 when it's released.
"Can't wait to be on your PC."
The Start menu makes a welcome return in Windows 10 and Cortana -- Microsoft's version of Apple's personal assistant Siri -- comes to the desktop for the first time.
We bid farewell to Windows Media Center, DVD playback software, and the card game Hearts.
Microsoft is taking a page out of Apple's book by offering Windows 10 at no charge. The idea is to keep people tied to the PC and to Microsoft services, like Office, which actually makes the company more money than Windows.
Most Windows users -- about half -- have Windows 7 installed. Only about 10 percent have upgraded to Windows 8.1.
