Test Of Warning Sirens Around Limerick Power Plant Planned For Monday

By Jim Melwert

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Don't be alarmed! A test of the emergency sirens around the Limerick nuclear power plant is scheduled for this afternoon.

Limerick Generating Station will conduct one of two yearly, full volume tests of the emergency sirens around 2pm Monday.

"So residents in the area may hear the sirens," says Bobby Kagel, Chester County Director of Emergency Services. "We're just letting them know not to be alarmed, it's just a test. They don't have to take any action."

Kagel reminds residents the siren is signal to tune to an emergency broadcast station for more information.

"They're not an evacuation notice," he says, "or a reason to leave your homes immediately."

It will be a full volume, three-minute test of the 165 sirens within the 10-mile radius of the power plant, done the first Monday in June and December.

Residents may contact the counties at the following numbers if they have concerns during testing:

  • Berks County (610) 374-4800
  • Chester County (610) 344-5000
  • Montgomery County (610) 631-6530

The sirens used to be tested on the first Monday of each month. Exelon switched to biannual tests after they installed new sirens in 2012.
