Natural light can brighten your home, open up your space and improve your view — it can also save you money on your monthly energy bills. If you're looking for a refresh, try these five tips to add a little extra light:

Add more windows

If you're feeling really ambitious, add or increase the size of existing windows to increase your home's natural lighting. Incorporate tall windows to maximize space or look for creative ways to add windows to dark areas of your home, like bathrooms or stairwells.

Add entry doors with glass

To brighten your entryway, consider an entry door with glass. These types of doors can be customized to match the style of your home while adding a little personality.

Reflect existing light

Add large mirrors to a room to take advantage of the existing natural light in a room. Mirrors can make a space look larger, brighter and more welcoming.

Incorporate interior blinds

Unlike heavy drapes or shades, interior blinds can reduce energy loss while allowing you to easily control how much light enters a room. According to the Energy Department, when closed and lowered, highly reflective blinds can reduce heat loss by up to 45 percent.

Switch out the bulbs

Sometimes adding a little extra light can be as simple as switching out an old light bulb. Try making the switch to more energy efficient light bulbs, such as LED or halogen, to cut down on your home's energy usage.
