New Urban Garden Benefits Local Camden Community

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) -- Volunteers were out Sunday, planting a new urban garden in Camden. Food produced there will help feed needy families in the neighborhood.

The two acre lot at 2nd Street and Kaighn Avenue is just one of many undeveloped spaces in the city. This is a kill two birds with one stone type of project.

Kelly Lyons works at the Garden State Discovery Museum and she helped spearhead the effort.

"Fresh fruits and vegetables are not easy to come by here. There's a lot of abandoned land here that's not being used, that's being wasted," said Lyons. "So why not plant food on it because that's what's really needed here."

She hopes other groups will get on board and use more vacant lots for farming.

"We have a little bit of everything, but we have a ton of tomatoes and a ton of peppers," Lyons said. "And the neighborhood center has already done a lot with their strawberries and squash."
