South Jersey Welcomes Unofficial Start of Summer With Weather Officially Glorious

By Mike DeNardo

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- The allure of the Jersey shore was fully evident today as thousands packed the beaches on a sunny Memorial Day.

It was a warm, breezy, and spectacularly sunny holiday on the beach in Sea Isle City.

The most difficult thing many beachgoers had to do was keep enough sunscreen on.  Kelly O'Connor, of Northeast Philadelphia, has been here with her family all weekend.

"We've just kind of been hanging out, grilling, and having sone family time," she said.  "And we went to the Cape May Zoo."

The O'Connors were finishing their Memorial Day by enjoying the sun, sand, and surf.  And despite the prospect of homebound traffic, they were in no hurry to leave.

Memorial Day 2015 began with a glimpse of nature for Jake Naulty of Audubon, NJ and his daughters Sophia and Charlotte.

"It's so beautiful out here right now," Jake told KYW Newsradio.  "We got to see some dolphins right up close, about 100 yards from the beach.  And my girls saw them too.  It really made the whole summer so awesome!"

Many also took time to reflect at the annual Memorial Day ceremony here.  That's what Joe and Pat Gall of Andalusia, Pa. did.

"We just feel it's our duty," said Joe.

"They gave the ultimate sacrifice.  We can (give up) an hour to thank them," added Pat.

And while Memorial Day was ending for many, it was just beginning for Brett Stocchi of Conshohocken, Pa. and his family (top photo).

"We're going to enjoy two days and head back to work on Wednesday," he said.

What are their plans?

"We're going to hit the beach later.  Where are we going?  Ocean City?  Cape May for dinner.  Then, hopefully, the beach again tomorrow, to get some sun to get rid of this ghost white skin!"

If the next two days are like this one, Brett ought to have some serious tan lines by the time he heads back to work.
