KYW FLASHBACK: Rizzo Wins GOP Primary Decade After Democratic Term

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Frank Rizzo and Liberace had only one thing in common: they both commanded a stage.

Rizzo, a onetime Police Commissioner and two-term Democratic Mayor, was an imposing figure who dominated the Philadelphia landscape. And he didn't like being out of the spotlight.

In 1991, after 10 years out of office, Rizzo jumped back in to a mayoral race. This time he would do it as a Republican. But first he had to get past District Attorney Ron Castile who wanted to move up.

He topped Castile in the primary and was getting ready for a bruising campaign against Democrat Ed Rendell, another charismatic figure.

But before the election, Frank Rizzo died. That battle of Titans was never decided.
