One Of Prominent Sculptor's Final Works Being Unveiled Locally At His Alma Mater

By Mike DeNardo

RADNOR, Pa. (CBS) - One of the last works by the late sculptor Lawrence Nowlan is being unveiled this morning at Archbishop Carroll High in Radnor, Delaware County.

Lawrence "Doobie" Nowlan is known to many as the sculptor who created the fan-funded Harry Kalas statue at Citizens Bank Park. He was working on the Joe Frazier statue before his sudden death two years ago.

Nowlan, though, completed a statue being dedicated today at 9:30 a.m. outside his alma mater. The 12-foot statue at the entrance to the school depicts Jesus with his arms outstretched.

Marita Coffey-Finley, a member of Carroll's class of '86, says the figure is titled, "Welcoming Jesus..."

"He is standing in a way that it looks like he's walking toward you with his arms out -- that he's literally waiting, ready, coming to give you a big hug."

She says it's bittersweet that Nowlan won't be at the dedication:

"He did this. He did this for all of us. Now he's gone, and we carry on."

The Archdiocese says the statue is one of the largest pieces of religious art in the region.
