Man Gunned Down, Struck By Car, Killed In West Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Police say a man is dead after he was shot at multiple times then was ran over by a car late Wednesday night in West Philadelphia.

This happened around 11:45 p.m. on the 4200 block of West Girard Avenue.

According to police, the 29-year-old victim was first shot at a dozen times.

"We found 12 spent shell cases, all within inches, some were just feet away from where the victim had collapsed, which is indication he was the intended target and also indicated he was shot from point-blank range," says Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The victim was then accidentally ran over by a car, police say, driven by a 79-year-old man who didn't realize the victim was on the ground.

The victim was taken to Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 79-year-old driver was taken into custody for suspected DUI.

During the incident, police say a nearby car with two people inside was struck by a stray bullet, but fortunately neither of them were injured.

"Had it been several more inches over, the bullet could have went through the driver door or the front windshield," Small says.

Police say they found drugs and a handgun on the victim.

The shooting suspect remains at large. Anyone with information is asked to call police.

Police say they found a nearby business with surveillance cameras which they hope will help their ongoing investigation.
