Mighty Writers Opens Bilingual Center

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you", the words of Maya Angelou that appear under the masthead of Mighty Writers, a Philadelphia community-based program with more than 300 writers, journalists artists and volunteers who teach and mentor some 2,000 kids, 7 to 17, to think and write with clarity to achieve success in school, work and life.

They work in after school academies, short term writing classes, SAT prep and college, writing nights and weekends with two locations.

One just south of Center City and one in West Philly, Mighty Writers saw a need for a bilingual center, and has just opened El Futuro, in the heart of the city's Mexican- American community, where most of the kids speak Spanish at home.

They're bilingual and the goal is to make them biliterate - able to read and write in both languages and become the best writers in America.
