NJ Senator Proposes Anyone Applying For Driver's License Be Automatically Registered To Vote

By David Madden

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) -- There could be a pilot program in Camden County that would boost voter rolls by use of the Motor Vehicle Commission.

State Senator James Beach wants anyone old enough to vote to be automatically registered to vote when they apply for a drivers license.

"Because of our elections and the voter turnout that's typically abysmal, I think if we are doing something like this it may encourage people to vote and certainly get younger voters involved in the process."

The plan is patterned on a law already in place in Oregon. New licensees would get a notice in the mail informing them of their automatic non-partisan registration.

They'd then have 21 days to opt out or declare a party affiliation. Beach's proposal seeks a six month trial program in Camden County to see if it could work statewide.
