Beer Science Class Held In Philadelphia

By Diana Rocco

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you like beer and you're into science, then you will love the science of beer making -- a beer science fair class held at Yards Brewery Friday night to celebrate Philadelphia's nine-day science week.

"It's a lot like traveling through your high school science lab, but instead of working with dissecting frogs and earthworms, we're going to just break apart beer," said Adam Pizzi.

In a hands on how-to, a group of more than 60 over-21 adults touched, tasted and learned about barley, hops, malt, and why skunked beer skunks. They had beakers and magnifying glasses. Yards beer maker Drew Rutherford says it's truly an art.

"Really simple, but there's a lot of things that can go wrong. So we're standing on the shoulders of people who have been doing this for a millennium," said Rutherford.

So not only are beer lovers getting to see the science of what goes into making their favorite beer, but there's also a food truck here part of the event, making selections that pair well with their favorite beer.

"We came up with a dish that pairs with their Brewniverse beer which is wheat beer, like a wheat, white IPA that they did with pork belly which also has orange zest and coriander," said Robert Legget of The Guerrilla Truck.

"I ordered the BBQ Belly," said one event-goer.

(Reporter:) "Do you think that will go well with what your drinking?"

"I think it will I'm drinking a little bit of everything tonight."

"I don't know anything about beer so I'm actually learning a lot," said another.
