Save Energy This Summer

This article is supplied and sponsored by Pella Windows and Doors of Philadelphia.

The heat is nice, but you'd still like to keep it cool at home without high energy costs. Here are some great tips to help you save on cooling costs this spring and summer.

Check your windows

Leaky windows can let warm air in, causing your cooling systems to work harder to regulate indoor temperatures. Check your windows for cracked panes, damaged caulk or weather stripping.

Use your fans

When your air conditioning is on, make sure ceiling fans are on, too. Running a ceiling fan allows you to raise your thermostat by four degrees. This can help you reduce cooling costs by circulating cold air efficiently.

Tune up your A/C

Schedule an annual tune-up for your cooling systems. If you need to replace your air conditioner, evaporative cooler, or heat pump, look for the ENERGY STAR logo as you shop.

Don't add extra heat

On hot days, avoid using the oven and close all windows. Energy efficient windows and doors can help seal out heat in the summer and avoid high cooling costs. Light bulbs also give off extra heat, so replace them with energy-efficient LED's or CFL's.
