12-Hour Annual Passenger Car Race Tests The Endurance Of Dozens Of Drivers

By David Madden

MILLVILLE, NJ (CBS) -- It's not exactly the 24 hours of Daytona, but a 12-hour car race in Millville today will test the endurance of some 40 participants. It's the sixth annual "Devil in the Dark" competition.

Souped up passenger cars are making the rounds at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in an event sponsored by the South Jersey division of the Sports Car Club of America.

JD King is race chairman. He says those who take part do it for the love of the sport.

"The allure for the drivers is the endurance part. You need a team of guys to do it. You can't drive all 12 hours of it by yourself. So there's a lot of team work involved."

To the winner goes a trophy and a year's worth of bragging rights. You don't get rich on this track. Then again, racers in this event either have day jobs or are retired.

King says a few professionals have taken part in past races just to keep their skills in tune, but not this year.
