Weather: A Spring Freeze Ahead

By Steven Strauss

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The thermometer will take a nose dive overnight as cold air settles into the Delaware Valley. Freeze Watches and Warnings have been posted for many locations as the mercury falls to near record territory. In the city, we are forecasting a low of 36 degrees but many suburb locations will see temperatures at or below 32 degrees.

If you started early on your garden, you'll want to protect those sensitive plants and vegetation through Saturday morning by placing a cover on them or bringing them indoors. In addition, gusty winds will create wind chill values in the 20s throughout most of the region.

Here are some record lows for Friday morning.

Atlantic City: 26 set in 1989
Allentown: 29 set in 1930
Trenton: 29 set in 1930
Philadelphia 33 set in 1930

The chill persists through Friday with high temperatures only in the 50s (10 degrees below avg.) and Friday night will be cold again with lows in the 30s. There is some promising news. Temperatures will rebound into the mid 60s by next week and summer is only 57 days away!!
