Quick Moving Storms Leave Path Of Damage Across The Delaware Valley

By Diana Rocco

WESTVILLE, N.J., (CBS) -- The storms came in fast and furious. Strong winds with gusts up to 70 mph in some places from New Jersey to Delaware and Chester counties uprooting trees, causing branches to fall and downing power lines.

"The winds were picking up and I was on the porch and I've been worried about the tree for a while it's just got a hole in the center of it, so it was in pretty bad shape that's when the tree was just, it stopped, but it was scary," said a neighbor.

On West Olive Street in Westville, New Jersey a giant tree toppled onto a roof forcing the homeowner and her friend out for the night. The structure is now unsafe.

"I left to go out, came back, see the police car come down the street and I look up and I see the tree laying over on the house."

"Wait and see what they say."

The owner's friend was walking her dogs when the tree came down. The owner, a woman who has lived here since the 1980's, says she didn't think the tree would fall but now she's leaving with her two dogs and two birds until authorities allow her back home. Neighbors were also left without power.

"It is what it is now, so now you got the power out, who knows what we're going to do for the night, but we're trying to figure that out now."

In Glassboro, a tree toppled over on power lines blocking the homeowner in the driveway, while the company worked to repair the damaged lines.  In Pennsauken, another street closed due to a tree leaning on the lines, uprooted right from the ground.

In Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood, a tree fell across East Girard Avenue blocking the road.

In North Coventry, Chester County a branch collided with a car, narrowly missing the driver.
