Twitter Updates Direct Messaging

By Melony Roy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Twitter has announced that all 288 million monthly active users will now have the option to receive direct messages for any user.

The social network has begun rolling out the new messaging feature worldwide. Users will not receive messages from strangers unless they decide to change their setting. The setting to receive direct messages from anyone will be turned off by default.

Twitters private messaging feature has been considered a weak point of its service. Previously, you could only send messages to users who followed you, and you could only receive messages from any user you followed.

The company says the changes are to help its users connect more easily and directly with people, causes, and businesses they care about most.

This year, Twitter has revamped its service with some new features like group direct messages, the ability to share and edit video inside the platform and has revamped its retweet feature.
