KYW Flashback: End Of An Era, Philadelphia Bulletin Turns Off The Presses

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The war of 1812 was nearly forgotten and the Civil War had not yet begun when the Philadelphia Bulletin was launched to become the city's best-selling paper.

When KYW began broadcasting "all-news, all the time", the venerable publication was dropping 15 separate editions on newsstands every weekday, each with the latest breaking news.

But radio and television began to take their toll and by 1982, the publishers turned off the giant presses.

KYW reported the passing and the distress of readers who had made a lifetime habit of having the Evening Bulletin for company at the end of a day.

It also signaled the arrival of the internet and a changing media landscape.
