Philadelphia Church Spends $33,000 Performing Acts Of Kindness

By community affairs reporter Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A South Philadelphia church rallied nearly 200 volunteers this week with the hope of starting a revolution -- but not the kind of revolution that may first come to mind.

Theirs is called a serv-o-lution.

"Generosity is contagious, and it's the most enjoyable way to live," says Brad Leach, head pastor of City Life Church.  His congregation raised $33,000 and decided to spend it by performing dozens of random acts of kindness over the course of six days.

"We're going to be all over the city, serving social workers and teachers and giving out gift bags," he explained.

Today, they gave free tacos and cookies to 65 officers at the Third District police station (top photo).  They gave cupcakes to schoolkids in North Philadelphia, and free dinners to doctors and nurses at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

And, says Leach, there will be more to come.

"Our goal really is to inspire a revolution in the rhythm of our lives -- to just live lives that are generous and compassionate," he says.
