PA Elections Chief Says Online Voter Registration In Works

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) --- The state's top elections official says his department should be ready to launch some form of online voter registration in Pennsylvania in the coming months, if lawmakers are on board.

Testifying at House budget hearings, Pedro Cortes, Governor Wolf's nominee for Secretary of State, said his department is working on details of online voter registration.

"We feel that we, within four months or so… if it meets with the approval of the colleagues here… I think we can roll [out] some form of online voter registration that could capture signatures from PennDOT… and there's discussions as to whether there will be the possibility of upload signatures as well," Cortes said.

In response to one House member who questioned the ability to move forward, Cortes said he believed the Department of State has the authority to collect signatures and voter registration applications electronically, but out of respect for members of the legislature, he said he would like to have "further dialogue" with lawmakers about online voter registration.
