Though Leonardo Da Vinci was sketching parachute-like devices five centuries ago, French hot air balloon enthusiasts were the first to try it out as a life-saving means of escaping a crash in the 1800s.

That design in the 21st century has a new application as a life-preserver for heart failure patients. An implantable device inspired by that historic shape is available in clinical trials at Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Burlington County.

"Heart failure is a difficult spectrum of disease to treat," says Deborah Director of Clinical Research Dr. Jon George, "because it's so variable, how patients respond to it." But with some five million people nationwide suffering from heart failure, he says the Parachute Procedure he's testing at Deborah could produce a major improvement in these patients' day-to-day lives... and potentially keep some of them off the waitlist for a heart transplant.
