This Day In History: Wilt Chamberlain's 100-Point Game

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The day was March 2nd, 1962. The location was Hershey Sports Arena in Hershey, Pa.
The Philadelphia Warriors squared off against the New York Knicks and on that day a record was achieved that has stood until now and that will more than likely stand forever.
Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in an NBA game to set the amazing record and on this day 53 years later, that record has barely been threatened.
Chamberlain opened the game with 23 first quarter points and added on another 18 in the second quarter. With 41 to his name, he dropped 28 in the third quarter.
In the final quarter, the Warriors began to get the ball to Chamberlain at all cost as he continued his scoring mission. He rounded out the game with 31 fourth quarter points. Chamberlain's 100 points topped his own previous NBA single game scoring record of 78.
Since that historic night, the closest an NBA player has come to the record was Kobe Bryant who scored 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors in 2006.
Following the game, the Sixers current Director of Statistical Information, Harvey Pollack, was on hand. That evening, he scribbled "100," on a piece and paper and gave it to Chamberlain to hold up.
Photographers took pictures and that image has become one of the most iconic in sports history.
