Officer Struck, Dragged By Fleeing Vehicle In Riverside, New Jersey

RIVERSIDE, N.J. (CBS) -- A police officer was injured after being struck by a vehicle and then dragged more than 30 feet in Riverside, Burlington County.

The incident started around 1:00 a.m. Saturday when police received a call for a suspicious vehicle parked in the parking lot of Riverside Township Elementary School at 120 East Washington Street.

Police say responding officers approached the car, and the driver, 23-year-old Brandon Belton of Willingboro, immediately became uncooperative and refused to show his hands. Instead, authorities say he shifted the car into drive and sped away, striking one officer and dragging her 30 to 40 feet before colliding head-on with an unoccupied patrol car that was stopped in the driveway of the exit of the school parking lot.

Belton and a passenger, 39-year-old Bonnie Manning of Riverside, were removed from the vehicle and arrested. Police say officers found marijuana inside the car.

The injured officer, Amaya Urtasun, a 16-year veteran of Riverside Township Police Department, was taken to Cooper University Medical Center where she was treated for knee and abdominal injuries.

Both Belton and Manning were jailed and charged with Aggravated Assault on a police officer, Criminal Attempted Manslaughter, Assault by Auto, drug charges and other offenses.

Additional charges were pending.
