Camden Students Celebrate After Getting Second Chance At School

By Justin Udo

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - Some high school students in Camden who dropped out or have fallen years behind in their studies get another shot at graduation. On Thursday, many of them even got to walk across the stage and get their diploma.

Yemaya Turner says she was apprehensive about starting the second chance program:

"I was like totally disrespectful. I didn't want to go to school, I didn't want to come here. I thought it wasn't going to help me, I wasn't going to do nothing."

The 17-year-old Camden native says the program helped her do a complete 180 inside and outside of the classroom:

"They helped me get my first job, I just got my license. They take us to a lot of trips so we can go on to college. It helped me a lot, it really did."

Yemaya now has her sights set on going to Rutgers where she plans on studying forensic psychology.
