Former Local Contestant On 'The Amazing Race' Speaks To CBS 3

By Todd Quinones

MEDIA, Pa., (CBS) -- Racing around the world on TV it turns out brings out the toughest critics.

Shelley Porter who now lives in Media, Delaware County learned that the hard way.

The impact of what winds up on the editing room floor was clear after Porter and her daughter Nici were eliminated.

"My Mom said why did you take so long to ask for directions, you only stopped once. I was like, are you kidding me, we stopped every 10 minutes," said Porter.

In looking through some memorabilia she collected while on last season's show, she told Eyewitness News she discovered The Amazing Race has super fans.

Fans who take their pictures and follow them through parts of their journey across the globe.

"It is an entire culture of people who this is their job, I think they've been spotted here, and then they have the time schedules for all the flights and where we could possibly be going next," said Porter.

And when the cameras stopped rolling, Porter says lots of mingling between the contestants was discouraged all for the sake of drama for the hit CBS reality series.

"And if we're having a heated discussion and no one is around to record it, then it didn't happen."

And when the leg of the race was finished, contestants slept in hotel rooms with a few exceptions.

"For Shetland Island we slept out on the beach which was very beautiful."

And to avoid cheating the camera crew documenting each team constantly changed.

"They won't let you have the same crew every day, they keep you from bonding with them to make sure that they don't tell you anything."

The mother daughter duo wound up placing sixth out of 11 teams winning a total of $3,500.
