Dom Giordano: Countdown To CPAC

By Dom Giordano

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- I'll be broadcasting this Thursday from Washington at the big conservative convention called CPAC. This convention draws thousands of conservatives of every stripe, and this year, they are particularly excited and hopeful. This is a place where Jeb Bush will get a tepid response at best but Rand Paul will be a rock star.

The key word in my mind as I head there is "outreach." Rand Paul exemplifies this. He speaks on college campuses and before black and Latino groups. He is modeling good political outreach.

I think conservatives also must be open to pop culture. I know Hollywood is often the enemy of traditional values and conservatives. However, look at the great joy and good that has come out of Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper" film. A tremendous number of people have told me they have gone to a movie theater after years of absence.

A number of people told me the same thing about Dinesh D'Souza's "America" film. I think giving up on going to see films is a mistake. It's a great pleasure.

I think it's a good idea for parents to be aware of what's going on in pop culture in order to try to steer their kids to the better things in music, film, sports.

I hope you join me this Thursday from CPAC. I'll bring you "Big Issues, Big Guests" but also this theme of outreach.
