Could This Be One Of The Coldest Februaries Ever?

By Geoff Bansen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 'balmy' Sunday across the Delaware Valley prompted the use of words such as "shorts" and "outdoors" in the same sentence this morning.

The funny thing is, yesterday's high of 45 was STILL technically below average - a mere 1 degree, but below average nonetheless. Amazing what a week of brutal arctic air and windy can do.

We dive right back into winter by this afternoon. Clouds (and even a morning flurry!) will give way to sunshine later today, and temperatures will take an icy plunge. Twenties will turn to 10s, and eventually single digits by Tuesday morning. Making it worse is our good ol' friend Mr. Wind Chill. He will start gusting from the northwest over the next few hours and will cause temperatures to feel below zero starting tonight.

Things don't get much better the rest of the week, which is expected to remain below average for the remainder of the month. This has a chance to be one of the top five coldest Februaries on record! The good news in all of this is that the week looks to be primarily quiet weather-wise. As it stands now, the next active weather could come in the form of some rain over the weekend. Keep your hopes up, my friends - Sunday is meteorological spring!
