Sixers Sign Guard Ishmael Smith

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Sixers announced on Sunday afternoon that they have signed point guard Ishmael "Ish" Smith. In a related move, the team waived forward Malcolm Thomas to create a roster spot for Smith.

In 221 career games, Smith is averaging three points and two assists per game.

Smith has appeared in games for seven NBA teams in his five year NBA career prior to joining the Sixers. He was acquired by the New Orleans Pelicans at Thursday's deadline from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Pelicans waived Smith on Friday.

Smith appeared in 30 games for the Thunder before being traded. He averaged 1.2 points and 0.9 assists in just over five minutes per game.

The Sixers will now have three point guards on their roster with the addition of Smith. The team also has former Penn State player Tim Frazier, who is on a second 10-day contract with the team, and newly acquired point guard Isaiah Canaan.
