Gov. Wolf Seeks Healthy Pa. Natural Gas Industry; Again Denies Ban Threat

By Tony Romeo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Governor Wolf, who proposed a tax on natural gas drilling last week, told KYW Newsradio's sister station KDKA Wednesday he wants the natural gas industry to succeed in the state and denies that he's threatening a ban.

When he first announced his proposal to tax natural gas drilling, Wolf made the following remark…

"You know, the alternative is not really no tax… the alternative is no drilling – a ban as in the case of New York."

Moments later, Wolf emphatically clarified that he was not threatening a ban. But appearing on KDKA, the governor found himself defending the remark again. Wolf insists he wants a vibrant natural gas industry, and not just for Pennsylvania's sake:

"This is really important for American self-sufficiency. There's so many good things that can come from taking responsible advantage of this natural resource… so many good things can happen to Pennsylvania and the United States as a result of this… I want this industry to succeed."

The governor adds he "disagrees" with New York's ban on natural gas drilling.
