Weather: Tracking Snow Squalls, Brutally Cold Temperatures And Gusty Damaging Winds

By Steven Strouss

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Delaware Valley will be in Winter's grip this weekend so it will be a great time to snuggle up with your Valentine. We are tracking snow squalls, brutally cold temperatures and gusty damaging winds all within the next 48 hours. A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect for most of the region until 7am Sunday. We expect 1-3" of snow Saturday afternoon which will reduce visibility and create slick spots. The winds will pick up Saturday evening when a High Wind Watch goes into effect. NW winds will gust to 60 mph. This is strong enough to bring down tree limbs and power lines so there could be scattered power outages as we head into Sunday. Any loose outdoor items should be brought inside or tied down; these are some serious winds! Wind chills are going to be below zero Saturday night through the end of the weekend. It is going to be bone-chilling no matter where you are on Sunday so take precautions if you need to go out. Hat, scarf, gloves - the works! The cold lingers into Monday morning and the record low of 2 set back in 1888 will be in jeopardy.

Where is the cold coming from? In short, Saturday's clipper will drag the polar air into the region. In addition, the low will intensify offshore creating those tight pressure gradients which will unleash the Arctic chill and keep the winds high and the temperatures low.

Just How Cold?

Here's how it breaks down in Philadelphia.

Sunday morning: Wind Chills -10 to -20

Monday morning: Wind Chills -5 to -15

Monday morning" Low 2 (record Low 2 in 1888)

ANOTHER Storm

It's amazing to think that Philadelphia has dodged so many of this winter's snowfalls while Boston has been getting buried by nearly 80".  Right now we stand with just over 5" total in the city but we have a good chance of adding more snow tomorrow afternoon and possibly next Tuesday night into Wednesday as another system moves through. We will keep an eye on this. It will only take 1.6" of snowfall to be the snowiest storm of 2014-2015 in Philadelphia so we shall see if we can get this within the next 5 days.

Stay warm!
