Advice On Homesickness

Sponsored Provided Content

Every summer millions of kids head off to camp and many experience being on their own for the first time. They may also experience homesickness for the first time.   While the feeling is hard, it can be aided with preparation and patience according to the American Camp Association.

Homesickness is "the norm rather than the exception" according to Phillips Exeter Academy psychologist Dr. Christopher Thurber.  He reports that "82 percent of campers studied reported homesickness on at least one day of camp."

Thurber and the American Camp Association offer lots of advice on how to prepare your child for when homesickness strikes including, "Encourage your child's independence throughout the year. Practice separations, such as sleepovers at a friend's house, can simulate the camp environment." and "Discuss what camp will be like before your child leaves. Consider role-playing anticipated situations, such as using a flashlight to find the bathroom"
