A Philadelphia Charter School Helping Its Students Navigate High School Choices

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Students at one Southwest Philadelphia charter school today were learning about their high school options.

Sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders at the Southwest Leadership Academy, a K-8 charter school, gathered in the auditorium for pitches from four high schools:  West Catholic, Cristo Rey, Universal Audenried, and Prep Charter High Schools.

But Justin Hall, Southwest's director of student services, says the students are exposed to an array of high school options.

"It's become more and more difficult to get the district schools out here, but we've been able to get charters and parochials successfully," he tells KYW Newsradio.  "We also took our students to the high school fair that was held at the (33rd Street) Armory.  We took all of our eighth-graders to that fair," where, he points out, Philadelphia school district schools were represented.

Hall says that by eighth grade, most of his students already know what high school they want to attend.
