Longtime Local Tradition, Girl Scout Cookie Sales, Begins Anew With Expanded Product Line

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Girl Scout cookie sales begin today.

Kenneth Anderson, senior director of product program with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, says the annual Girl Scout Cookie campaign runs through March 8th.

"Girl Scouts is the largest girl-led organization in the world, and in Eastern Pennsylvania we support over 40,000 girls," he tells KYW Newsradio.

What's the biggest seller?

"Traditionally, it's the Thin Mint."

Last year the Girl Scouts rolled out their first gluten-free cookie.  This year, they are adding to their gluten-free inventory by selling a cookie called the "Trio."

Also new this year, salesgirls have the ability to sell cookies on their mobile devices.

"Through the mobile app, the transaction is completed so the cookies are ordered and directly shipped to the customer's address," Anderson explains.

And he says all proceeds go directly back to the girl who made the sale:

"The proceeds from the cookie sales actually go directly back to the girl; and the girl is given the option to use those proceeds to do various things, and historically our girls use those proceeds to go on trips, to go to camp."
