Parents Should Limit Young Children's Time Spent On Mobile Devices

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There is no doubt that we are raising a generation of kids who have become masters at using technology including mobile devices.

There are clear advantages but, according to an article in the journal Pediatrics, there is a downside as well.

The article suggests that parents should be careful when it comes to allowing their infants, toddler and preschool-aged children to use these devices and other forms of interactive media. Certainly these devices may hold some educational benefits for young children, but the researchers say the distraction can interfere with young children's ability to develop critical personality skills.

There is no reason to ban kids from these devices but clearly parents should closely supervise what content their kids access and take additional steps to encourage outdoor play and socialization with other kids.
