Health Officials: Lab Test Results Negative For Measles In Potential Case In Delaware And Philadelphia Counties

HARRISBURG, Pa., (CBS) -- The Pennsylvania Department of Health announced Friday that lab test results came back negative in a potential case of measles in Delaware and Philadelphia counties that was announced on Wednesday.

"Based on initial information received from those involved in the treatment of the individual and based on initial investigation by the department, it was believed this was a likely case of measles and public notification was made out of an abundance of caution. Measles is a highly contagious disease and there is a small window of time after exposure to receive the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine or immunoglobulin for those who have not been vaccinated," said Secretary of Health Michael Wolf in a statement. "Since Wednesday, further investigation was conducted and samples were taken for testing by the state's lab, which confirmed the individual has tested negative and there is no public health risk for measles at this time."

Health officials say those who visited the following locations on the days and during the timeframes noted are no longer considered to be at risk for measles:

CVS Pharmacy, 316 E. Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, Pa. on Sunday, Dec. 28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Please Touch Museum, Memorial Hall, Fairmount Park, 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia, Pa. on Monday, Dec. 29, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

"The department encourages vaccination as it's important to protect yourself and others in the community. In the United States, the chance of getting measles is small as vaccination rates are higher than in other parts of the world, but the disease still exists and can still infect anyone who is not protected," said Wolf in the statement.

If you are not immune to measles and want to receive MMR, ask your healthcare provider or contact the Pennsylvania Department of Health at 1-877-PA-HEALTH.
