After A Slow Start To Winter, Area Ski Resorts Say Weather Is Finally Cooperating

By Brad Segall

SCHWENKSVILLE, Pa. (CBS) -- It's been a rocky beginning for the ski season in Montgomery County, Pa.   But after a delayed opening, the slopes are now open for what could be a very lucrative holiday weekend.

At Spring Mountain Ski Area, in Schwenksville (Montgomery County), they started making snow in late November, hoping to get the season off to a great start.

But December brought rain and warmer temperatures, and they lost about half of the snow they stockpiled.

Now, the machines are working around the clock, and they will continue opening more lifts until they reach full capacity.

"Actually the snow we're making right now is great," notes Spring Mountain owner Rick Buckman.  "I mean, it's really cold out and the snow is nice and dry, and it's really a high quality."

Buckman says the week between Christmas and New Year is typically the busiest week of the ski season.  Unfortunately, he says, they lost about half of it but the long weekend should be good.  And at some point during the year, he adds, they hope to make up for the loss.
