Health Department: Confirmed Cases Of Flu In Pa. Rising Rapidly

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Officials at the Pennsylvania Department of Health say at least 11 people have died of the flu so far this year, and cases of influenza are on the rise.

The number of flu illnesses spiked to more than 2,500 last week. That's more than double from the week before and five times more than the first week of December.

Alleghney County had the most with more than 800 confirmed cases. Montgomery County is second with more than 300. Philadelphia had the fewest number in the five county region with just 89 confirmed cases.

Health department officials warn this may only be the tip of the iceberg as many cases go unreported because most people don't seek medical attention for flu-like symptoms.

Flu season runs from October through May and health officials estimate between five and 20 percent of Pennsylvanians will get sick this year.
