1 Killed, 1 Injured In Delaware County Crash
GLENOLDEN, Pa. (CBS) -- Authorities are investigating a fatal accident in Delaware County that occurred late Monday afternoon.
Chopper 3 was over the scene of the crash on the 100 block of South Chester Pike in Glenolden.
Around 4 p.m. Monday, investigators say a Folcroft police officer assigned to a traffic monitoring detail saw a white Nissan Maxima traveling west at a normal rate of speed on Chester Pike. According to investigators, the police officer saw that the vehicle's Certificate of Inspection was peeled back from the windshield and that the Certificate of Inspection appeared to be counterfeit.
Investigators say the police officer followed the Nissan onto Primos Avenue traveling south at a normal rate of speed and the driver then activated the left turn signal to turn left onto Glen Avenue. Investigators say the officer was traveling behind the Nissan and activated the emergency lights and siren of his police vehicle in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
According to investigators, while continuing to follow the Nissan through neighborhoods surrounding Glen Avenue and Folcroft Avenue for several blocks, the police officer saw that the driver of the Nissan turned onto Chester Pike traveling west and allegedly accelerated to an excessive rate of speed. While continuing to attempt to follow the Nissan on Chester Pike several blocks behind, investigators say the officer lost sight of the vehicle due to heavy traffic.
The officer than came upon the scene of the accident in front of the Glenolden Fire Company. Investigators say the officer saw that the Nissan collided with a red Pontiac Grand Am head-on.
Investigators say the 25-year-old driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Pontiac Grand Am is hospitalized in critical condition.
Accident investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division and the Southeast Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
Chester Pike was closed due to the crash.
