Gov.-elect Tom Wolf Visits Philadelphia To Address Pa. Budget

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Governor-elect Tom Wolf says he wants to make Pennsylvanians aware that he is going to have to take drastic action to fix Pennsylvania's budget.

KYW's Pat Loeb reports he was in Philadelphia Wednesday as part of a statewide tour.

The governor-elect was trying not to sound all gloom and doomy -- no talk of sacrificing or painful cuts. In fact, he says:

"If we recognize there's a problem, we could do some things that could be really actually very exciting," said Wolf.

So he's going statewide to make sure we recognize there's a problem.

"That we have a structural deficit and that it's a big one," said Wolf.

Wolf says he's still not sure exactly how big a deficit he's inheriting but he believes it's at least $2 billion. He also still won't say what he proposes to do about it.

"I think it's premature to even give a hint of a preview," said Wolf.

He continues to favor joining every other Marcellus Shale state and taxing extractors but he says that won't be enough. His only other commitment is that if there's any adjustment on the spending side, it won't be in education spending.

'This could be an exciting time. It's definitely not steady state," said Wolf.
