Twitter Lists Its Most-Tweeted Topics of 2014

By social media editor Melony Roy

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (CBS) -- Following Facebook's lead, Twitter today released its own "Year in Review" for 2014.

During the year, Twitter users sent an average of more than 500 million tweets per day.

But only one is recognized as the "Golden Tweet," the most-retweeted tweet of the year.

And this year, the honor goes to Ellen Degeneres' star-studded selfie at the Oscar Awards ceremony (top photo) last March.

The World Cup was the biggest sports story of 2014 on Twitter.  Fans, players, and teams sent more than 672 million tweets during the month-long FIFA tournament.  At its peak, there were more than 618,000 tweets sent per minute.

Among more somber topics, a mass kidnapping in Nigeria generated millions of tweets with the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.

And in August, there were more than 18 million tweets about the protests in #Ferguson, Mo.  In the hours following the grand jury's decision in November, there were 3.5 million tweets from across the US.
