Weekend Box Office Report: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 Remains #1
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The first weekend in December, always a calm-before-the-storm dead zone at the box office, ran true to form this year.
The science fiction sequel, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, made it three weeks in a row in first place, earning an estimated $22-million on its third weekend of release.
The holdover animated attraction, Penguins of Madagascar, was the runner-up, taking in $11–million, while third place went to the comedy sequel, Horrible Bosses 2, which earned $9-million.
Rounding out the top five were Big Hero 6 and Interstellar, each with just over $8-million.
As for the weekend's only debuting mainstream release – the horror thriller, The Pyramid – it earned just over $1-million, still sufficient for a ninth-place finish.
Overall, industry-wide totals were, to no one's surprise, quite low on a quiet movie weekend, but look for box office to pick up considerably for the rest of December.
