Mayor Nutter Fumes Over Handling of Ferguson, Mo. Police Shooting Probe

By Mike Dunn

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter today continues to voice criticism of the Ferguson, Mo. grand jury decision.

Nutter is particularly critical of the decision to announce the grand jury results in the evening, calling it "one of the dumbest official decisions that's been made in recent times."

"You're almost left with the impression that law enforcement down there expected something to happen, they were planning for something to happen.  Because I don't know under what other circumstance you would make a conscious decisions to make this kind of announcement at nine o'clock at night, as opposed to nine in the morning," Nutter told City Hall reporters today.

And he says the prosecutor's explanation of the findings left a lot of unanswered questions.

"He went from this fact, that fact, the other fact, and then skipped over the part of why did the officer shoot (Brown) ten times?  Why didn't he back up?  Why didn't he wait?  Why did he chase after him as opposed to retreating?  Those issues were not addressed in his presentation, and he could have taken as long as he wanted."

And Nutter repeated his assertion that Ferguson officials have "botched this thing from start to finish."

"If you turned off the sound, if you weren't paying attention to the story, you would in fact think you were (watching) some other country, somewhere else, in a warlike environment, based on what we saw last night," Nutter said.  "And now what we see, in the light of day, what's left."
