South Jersey Teachers Union Treasurer Charged With Theft

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — The treasurer of the teachers union in a southern New Jersey school district has been accused of stealing more than $20,000 from the group.

Wayne Wedderman is charged with theft and computer theft. Bail was set at $20,000 for the 42-year-old Lacey Township resident, and it wasn't known Sunday if he has retrained an attorney.

The charges stem from an investigation by Ocean County authorities. It began last month after officials with the Barnegat Education Association reported that about $23,000 was missing from union accounts, which Wedderman controlled.

Authorities say Wedderman wrote checks against an association account and used the money for personal expenses incurred by himself and family members. He also allegedly opened a debit card, which is against association by-laws, and used it for cash withdrawals and purchases.
