Students at a Montco Cyber Charter Help The Homeless While Learning Quilting

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. (CBS) -- Students in King of Prussia were learning to sew today, while helping the homeless at the same time.
Ninth grader Jacob Smith was one of the students from the Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School who were making quilts today for the "Ugly Quilt" project.
"They don't have to be professional," he explained about the name, "which is good because we're not professional. At all! (laughs)"
Heather Schaffer, the school's family support coordinator, says the quilts, actually quilted sleeping bags, will be donated to area homeless shelters.
"And since it started to become a little bit chilly recently, because of the colder nights, we thought that it would be a good idea for all of us to help make those nights a little bit warmer," she said.
Schaffer says service projects are an important part of the school's curriculum. Jacob Smith, the ninth grader, agrees.
"I think it's very important," he said, "because you have to realize that it's not always about you, and that it's about other people, too. And especially those who aren't as fortunate as you. I think it's better to give to those people than to keep everything for yourself."
