Court Appearance Today For Suspect In Caught-on-Tape Germantown Kidnapping

By Tony Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Delvin Barnes is expected to make his initial appearance today in federal court in Philadelphia to face charges that he kidnapped a 22-year-old Germantown woman and took her to Maryland -- where he was arrested and she was rescued three days later.

Barnes, 37, was ordered transferred from Virginia to Philadelphia for today's hearing by a federal judge here.

Generally, during a first appearance, the court will ensure the defendant has a lawyer, is aware of the charges, take an initial plea, and address the issue of bail.

But Barnes has already been ordered held without bail in connection with a separate case in Virginia, where he was put on suicide watch.

Federal authorities say Barnes confessed to the Philadelphia kidnapping after his arrest.  He is also charged in Virginia with the kidnapping, rape, and torture early last month in Virginia of a Richmond teen who escaped two days after she was abducted.

Authorities there say they have DNA in that case.
