Mother And Child Found Dead In Suspicious House Fire In South Jersey

EGG HARBOR CITY, NJ (CBS) -- Authorities are investigating after a second grader and his mother were found dead following a suspicious house fire in Egg Harbor City, Atlantic County.

The fire broke out on the 200 block of Washington Avenue Wednesday morning.

Crews found a mother and her child deceased in the home.

Police say a man was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

"The arson dog is looking to see if there is any flammable liquids. We're considering this suspicious at this time," Egg Harbor City Police Sergeant Dylan Hutton said.

Police say they have no suspect, but they don't think neighbors need to worry about any further danger.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office spent the entire day at the house piecing together the investigation into the two deaths.

"It's hard. It's hard when children are involved," neighbor Bernice Paccillo said.

Neighbors say the loss of a child is unspeakable and want to know how it all happened.

"Nothing ever happens around here so it's very scary and strange at the same time," neighbor Sheila Neate said.

The victims have not yet been identified.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Egg Harbor City Police Department are conducting the investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at (609) 909-7666.
