A Lesson In Native Plantings At Haverford College

By Phran Novelli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - On Sunday, November 16th, you're invited to a lecture at Haverford College by landscape architect Jonathan Alderson, who recently used an abundance of native plants and local building materials to transform 56 acres at Longwood Gardens into their new Meadow Gardens.

No matter what size space you may have, you can learn a lot from him about how you can use native plants to merge your gardens with natural areas.

This lecture is presented by the Hardy Plant Society and the Henry Foundation for Botanical Research along with the Haverford College Arboretum, which is worth a visit in itself.

Come early and stroll the campus to enjoy their Pinetum, gardens, as well as trees dating back to the Arboretum's beginnings in the 1830's, including the Bur oak, by Magill Library and a Swamp white oak, in front of Roberts Hall.

To enjoy this lecture, just be at the Sharpless Auditorium on the Haverford Collge Campus by 2 pm on Sunday, and feel free to stay for the reception that follows.

It's all free, and you don't need to RSVP, you can just wake up Sunday morning and decide to go. Get details at Haverford.edu/calendar and directions at Haverford.edu/visiting.
