Drivers Urged To Plan Routes Around Weekend-Long Closure of MLK Drive

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Martin Luther King Drive, along the west bank of the Schuykill River, will be closed starting tonight and will remain shut down until early Monday morning.

The temporary closure is designed to allow city Streets Department crews to safely make repairs to the roadway, curbs, sidewalks, and walls along MLK Drive.

Traffic will be diverted, starting at 9pm tonight, between the art museum circle (Eakins Oval) and Sweetbrier Drive.  It will  remain shut down until Monday at 5am.

The Streets Department says vehicles going toward center city can use the Schuylkill Expressway (entrance on Girard Avenue) or take 34th Street south to Spring Garden Street.

Motorists wanting to go north from the art museum can use Spring Garden Street to 33rd Street and 34th Street to Girard Avenue, or take Kelly Drive.
