Police Probing Events Leading to Fatal Hit-Run in Abington

By Brad Segall

ABINGTON, Pa. (CBS) -- A teenage driver struck and killed a child in Abington on Wednesday night and then drove off.

Police later caught up with her, and they are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

It was just before 9pm Wednesday night when, police say, the nine-year-old girl was walking with her caretaker in the 1700 block of Rockwell Road to get to a parked car.

"The caretaker had proceeded across the street," says Abington deputy police chief John Livingood.  "When there were no cars coming, she thought the little girl was right with her.  She had held back for some reason.  And by the time she crossed, there was a car coming."

He says the car couldn't avoid the child and struck her.

The 18-year-old girl then drove off, went to a local supermarket, and called her mother, who alerted police.
The victim was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Livingood says detectives are now looking into what was happening with the driver at the time of the crash.
