Chris Polk Admits He Wanted The Ball In Goal-Line Situations
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Just a couple of yards. Maybe, just a few feet. That's all that separates the 6-2 Philadelphia Eagles from perfection.
Against the 49ers, the Eagles chose to run two straight passes plays on the one-yard line down five points, failing to score, and eventually lost 26-21. Against the Cardinals, in a tie-game, the Eagles ran a 3rd-and-1 shotgun hand-off to LeSean McCoy who was stuffed. The Eagles went on to lose.
Third-string running back and kick returner Chris Polk, 5'11", 222-pounds, is considered the Eagles' "power back" and says he felt like he should have gotten the ball in those situations.
"Yeah, it's part of being a competitor, especially in those [goal-line] situations I felt like I really needed---we really needed to run the ball and give it to a power runner, but you know, it's not my place to say those things," Polk told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Wednesday. "They [the coaches] know a lot more about football than I do. They're the coaches, so whatever they're going to do and what they ask me to do, I'm gonna do to the best of my abilities because I'm trying to help the team. You know, there's no 'I' in team."
Polk, 24, is coming off his best game of the season where he rushed eight times for 50 yards and a score, in an Eagles 31-21 win over the Texans. While Polk's role on offense is limited behind LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles, he does have aspirations of one day being a lead back in the NFL.
"Yeah, I definitely see that at some point in my career, but at this time I'm behind two great running backs," Polk said. "Most people---it's definitely a humbling experience, you know, I can't speak, but a lot of people really wouldn't accept their roles, but I'm optimistic. I keep it positive with everything, so to be behind to veteran running backs like Darren and LeSean, and having a veteran coach like Duce Staley, I'm in running back gold mine. If that time comes, I'll be ready."
